Rogovoy Report 8/30/19

The highlights of the cultural weekend in our region include EDM, opera, a book fair, a classical vocal recital, chamber-pop, folk … plus a whole lot more.

Pathbreaking EDM artist Flying Lotus brings his electronic-music wizardry to MASS MoCA in North Adams on Saturday at 8 p.m. The experimental hip-hop and electronic artist and all-around wizard of the L.A. underground beat scene draws upon Afrofuturism and inspirational forebears including Madlib, Herbie Hancock, MF Doom, Miles Davis, J Dilla, and his great aunt and uncle – Alice and John Coltrane – for his unique mix of beat music.

Berkshire Opera Festival concludes its run of Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale” at the Mahaiwe in Great Barrington tonight at 7:30.

Spencertown Academy Arts Center’s 14th annual Festival of Books takes place this weekend through Monday. The Festival features a giant used book sale, two days of discussions with and readings by esteemed authors, and a children’s program. Featured authors include Ruth Reichl, Boris Fishman, Jenna Blum, David Yaffe, Steve Katz, and Crystal Hana Kim. The Festival kicks off on Saturday at noon with “Remembering Woodstock,” a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the seminal music festival, moderated by music industry veteran Gerald Seligman, featuring authors David Yaffe and Steve Katz.

Soprano Amanda Boyd take listeners on “A Journey of Song,” from Purcell to Schumann to Brahms to Kurt Weill, with Erika Switzer on piano and baritone vocalist Wheelock Whitney, tonight at Hudson Hall at 7.

Four sisters from Fort Collins, Colo., were raised and homeschooled by their artist mother and professional songwriter father. They all liked to sing, they all showed musical promise, they had classical training, and now they perform together as a group called SHEL. And what comes out when they join forces is at once wholly organic but also delicately beautiful - a latticework of chamber-pop that connects the dots between bluegrass, the Roches, Philip Glass, and Led Zeppelin. They bring all this useless beauty to Club Helsinki Hudson on Sunday at 8 p.m.

The Hudson Eye, a new multi-venue series presented by Jonah Bokaer Arts Foundation, continues its 10-day run this weekend. The artist-driven public program and urban showcase features visual and performing arts by the likes of Laura Gutierrez, Elena Mosely, Tony Orrico, Timothy Stanley, J.M. Tate, Alexander Turnquist and others.

Woodstock legend and folk troubadour Tom Pacheco celebrates his ninth annual Labor Day Weekend concert for Flying Cat Music in Phoenicia, N.Y., on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Pacheco’s career as a singer-songwriter dates back to 1965, when his psychedelic folk-rock band the Ragamuffins released two singles. Pacheco became a folk-music icon recording and performing as an acoustic artist based in Greenwich Village (with stops in Austin and Nashville), and later in the Catskills, as made clear in his valentine to the region, “In the Hills of Woodstock.” His songs have been covered by Jefferson Starship and Richie Havens, among many other artists.
