A painting of a prominent Lake Champlain geological formation that was commissioned as part of a New Deal program from the 1930s is getting a new chance to be conserved at the University of Vermont.
The painting of the Rock Point Overthrust was created by Vermont artist Raymond Pease as part of the Public Works Art Project, which employed artists during the Great Depression.
It was originally displayed as part of a geological exhibit at UVM's Fleming Museum. In the early 1960s, it was moved into an adjacent building that housed the geology department. In the early 1990s, it was covered up and all but forgotten because officials didn't have the money restore it.
Construction workers found it last week.
It is now being moved and will be restored.
