Programming Notes: April 2020

It is a strange time in the country as the coronavirus pandemic slows everyday life to a halt. But not all is bad. As we take to social media for interaction and entertainment, we’re seeing a new wave of positivity and selflessness. Restaurants are providing free meals and people from all nations are joining in on the couch choir craze. As we lean on each other for support, many are hoping this will be a cultural change to last.

What’s coming up in April…

To keep you informed and up-to-date, WAMC will continue to offer live White House briefings and announcements from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as they unfold. We will also continue providing special coverage of the global coronavirus crisis with The National Conversation with All Things Considered airing Monday through Friday at 9 p.m. Tune in each day to WAMC to hear news and updates on the COVID-19 pandemic.

While live performances are canceled at the Met due to health risks, Saturday matinee broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera will continue with memorable, pre-recorded performances from the Met archives beginning at 1 p.m.

This month on Person Place Thing, on April 3 host Randy Cohen sits down with Paula Scher, one of the most acclaimed graphic designers in the world and the recipient of hundreds of industry honors and awards including: the National Design Award for Communication Design, the AIGA medal and the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design. Scher has been a principal in the New York office of the distinguished international design consultancy Pentagram since 1991.

A. Eugene Kohn, a founding partner and chairman of Kohn Pedersen Fox, one of the world’s top architecture firms, has also been recognized with many prestigious awards including: The National Building Museum Chairman’s Award, The Skyscraper Museum Award, The Soane Foundation Honors, and the Alumni Award of Merit by the University of Pennsylvania—the highest university-wide award presented to alumni. Cohen connects with Kohn April 17. Person Place Thing airs Friday nights at 10:30 p.m.

On The Academic Minute, we’ll feature takeover weeks from Cornell College, the University of Richmond and Mercer University. Topics to be discussed include the search for love, the debate over religious symbols on public lands and how reading during hard times can help you keep your humanity. Other exciting research to listen for in April includes how to better share the road when driving or riding, how predictive data can help college students and also the unexpected benefits of school re-zoning. Tune in each weekday at 7:30 a.m. and 3:56 p.m. on WAMC or anytime at AcademicMinute.org.

Coming up at The Linda, WAMC's Performing Arts Studio - since the health of our community is extremely important to us we are canceling/postponing events until further notice. We will do our best to reschedule these events for a future date. Please visit thelinda.org for more details and updates.
