Dalton Approves Ban On Plastic Bags

Dalton has become the latest Western Massachusetts community to approve a ban on plastic bags.

At a special town meeting Monday, residents approved a ban on thin-film plastic bags at local shops and restaurants. Advocates for the ban cite the harm the bags pose to the environment. Six other towns in the county, including Lenox, Lee, Williamstown, Adams, Stockbridge and Great Barrington, have adopted similar bylaws.

The Dalton Board of Health will fine establishments that violate the ban up to $200 for repeated offenses.

The town also began to plan how it will regulate recreational marijuana. The town’s Cannabis Control Commission will continue deliberation.
