Boston Pops Cancels Spring Season, Tanglewood Fate Unclear

Apr 8, 2020

For the first time since 1890, the Boston Pops are canceling their spring season.

It’s only the second time in the orchestra’s 135-year history that it’s canceled a season. The planned performances from May 6th to June 13th have been called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The season was supposed to celebrate conductor Keith Lockhart’s 25th anniversary.

“We really need to prioritize safety, the safety of our audience, the safety of the orchestra and the staff, and everybody who makes the Boston Pops work,” said Lockhart.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra says it will decide the fate of the summer season at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts in the coming weeks as it follows the recommendations of the state, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization.
