Christy Mihos, Former Candidate For Massachusetts Governor, Dies

One of the more colorful characters in Massachusetts political history has died.

Christy Mihos, who amassed a fortune as the owner of a chain of convenience stores, gained public prominence as an outspoken critic of the Big Dig, and twice ran unsuccessfully for governor, as an independent and a Republican has died.

Republican State Senator Don Humason said he was saddened to hear of Mihos’ death from cancer at age 67.

"He was a bundle of energy," said Humason.  " I remember meeting with him years ago when I was a young state representative and he was considering a run for governor and he was all gung-ho to talk to all of us."

After leaving politics, Mihos’ personal life spiraled through allegations of domestic assault, a divorce, and a brief incarceration for failing to pay alimony.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
