Former Congressman Refunds Remainder Of Office Budget

Former Congressman Bill Owens
Bill Owens

Former 23rd district Representative Bill Owens has returned the balance of his congressional office budget to the treasury.
Owens is   returning over $147-thousand out of a budget of $1.2 million or 11.6% from his final year in Congress.   Owens notes that there is a long audit process when a member leaves the House and the money won’t reach the treasury for a couple months.

The former congressman says they managed his office to reduce costs.  “I think it’s important that people who are talking about reducing federal spending do it themselves.”

Owens returned between 6 and 10 percent of his office budget each year he was in Congress.
