Commission OK's Mandatory Boat Inspections for Upstate Lake

USDA

The Lake George Park Commission has approved a mandatory boat-washing and inspection program to protect one of New York's most popular lakes from invasive species.

The Lake George Park Commission unanimously voted Tuesday to create a program similar one implemented in several states in the West to combat invasive species. Conservation groups and New York environmental protection agencies have been battling a number of invasive creatures in Lake George, including Eurasian milfoil, zebra mussels and Asian clams.

Under the plan envisioned for Lake George, a 32-mile-long waterway in the eastern Adirondacks, all trailered boats would have to be inspected before they could be launched on the lake, and their hulls washed if needed.

Governor Andrew Cuomo must sign off on the program before it can take effect next year.
