WAMC has learned that Albany Police Chief Eric Hawkins was in a minor car collision earlier this month while on duty.

Police spokesman Steve Smith confirms Hawkins was driving a department vehicle at about 12:30 p.m. on November 22 when he was in a rear-end crash with a car entering Interstate 787 northbound from Quay Street.

Smith says the other driver experienced minor neck pain, while Hawkins was fine and stayed on the clock.

"There were very minor injuries on the driver who was in the other vehicle. He had a complaint of pain. He was out of his vehicle when officers arrived," Smith said. "He was assessing any damage to his vehicle, walking around, talking to our officers, but he was evaluated for a complaint of neck pain."

Smith says the police vehicle sustained “very minor damage.”
