An interview with superintendent-receiver Anthony Soto

The public schools in Holyoke, Massachusetts are now in a seventh year of state receivership.

Anthony Soto was named in July as the school district’s Superintendent/Receiver. This week he announced the COVID-19 protocols that will be in place when classrooms reopen later this month.

These include universal face-masking, students grouped in cohorts, and pooled COVID-19 testing. Soto is also encouraging vaccinations for everyone who is eligible.

He said the objective is for an uninterrupted school year.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Soto.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
