Instead of heading for the beach, many college students are home for an extended spring break as concerns over the novel coronavirus mount. In several communities, volunteers are handing out meals to school-age children, seniors, and others with mobility issues.

In the Schenectady County Town of Niskayuna, town board member Denise McGraw has organized students sent home from college to serve the community. McGraw told WAMC's Lucas Willard about Helping Hands of Niskayuna.

Lucas Willard is a news reporter and host at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he joined in 2011. He produces and hosts The Best of Our Knowledge and WAMC Listening Party.
