A New York politician who's believed to be one of the last World War II veterans serving in a state legislature is about to retire.
State Sen. William Larkin's long career will be celebrated at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center in Orange County on Monday, his last day in office. Larkin's nearly 40-year career in the Legislature started with his election to a Hudson Valley Assembly seat in 1978.
Larkin, a Republican from Cornwall-On-Hudson, has been in the Senate since 1991.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says the 90-year-old Larkin's retirement will leave 91-year-old Wisconsin state Sen. Fred Risser as the last WWII veteran still serving in a state legislature.
Larkin served with the Army in the Pacific during WWII and also fought in the Korean War.
