New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joins WAMC's Alan Chartock on The Roundtable. Cuomo, a Democrat, discussed tweets by President Trump criticizing action by New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood against the Trump Foundation.
In response to Cuomo's comments in today's interview regarding actions by a pay commission to boost state lawmakers' salaries and restrict outside pay, Republican Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan issued the following statement.
"Despite what Governor Cuomo now says, he knows that he, [Assembly] Speaker [Carl] Heastie, and I all agreed that the compensation committee’s sole responsibly would be to examine and set the appropriate pay level for legislators and others who had gone two decades without a pay raise," Flanagan said. "The committee was never charged with weighing in on issues such as outside income, the elimination of stipends, or changing the Legislature from part-time to full-time – and they were never even expected to discuss them. Matters essential to how the Legislature operates should be debated in public and out in the open, and any proposed reforms must be approved by voters through a constitutional amendment. I am disappointed that the Governor is attempting to rewrite history. He knows that he gave the Speaker and I his word. With at least one lawsuit already filed to challenge this panel's recommendations, it’s time for the Governor to be honest about his intent and his motives."
