Some voters in New York’s vast 21st Congressional District are urging their Republican Representative Elise Stefanik to hold town hall meetings, but on WAMC’s Congressional Corner Thursday the congresswoman who has just started her second term tells WAMC’s Alan Chartock that she prefers smaller, private meetings with constituents.
“So what I’ve done in my district as some of these groups and organizations affiliated with the Democratic movement nationally, as they’ve demanded for town halls, I’m actually inviting them in for meetings,” Stefanik said. “I want to sit down and actually talk to them their concerns regarding the Affordable Care Act, answer any questions they may have on immigration or on whatever issues actually.”
Stefanik says the nationalization of town halls is not a step in the right direction. The Republican added that most of her legislative proposals have come from conversations with constituents.
