Two pollutants that have been at the center of water contamination cases in upstate New York have been listed as hazardous substances.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has adopted a final measure to put PFOA-acid, PFOA-salt, PFOS-acid, and PFOS-salt on the list effective March 3rd.

The move would allow for continued use of firefighting foam containing the substances, but not for training or any other purposes on or before April 25th.  The state will also update the hazardous substance list to include Reportable Quantities for the chemicals.

Locally, the chemicals have been found in water sources in Hoosick Falls, Petersburgh, and Newburgh, New York.
