Emma Willard School Investigating Sexual Abuse Case

A former student of the Emma Willard school in Troy is claiming she was sexually abused by a staff member nearly two decades ago.

Kat Sullivan claims she had been bound, gagged, and raped by a history teacher at the school with whom she had a relationship in 1998.

Sullivan says when she told school officials, she was instructed she could either leave the private institution or be expelled.

Sullivan did not bring the case to the police until April of this year. Alumni have rallied around Sullivan’s case on social media and a petition was brought to the school calling for stronger sexual misconduct policies earlier this month.

The school told the New York Times that it has launched an investigation and that it has apologized to Sullivan and is ““working to provide resources to assist Kat in her recovery.”

Lucas Willard is a reporter and host at WAMC Northeast Public Radio, which he joined in 2011.
