Nearly 1,600 cities, counties and villages throughout New York will share in $100 million in new state funding for road projects.

It's part of a $21 billion, five-year plan to maintain and upgrade the state's roads and highways. The money can pay for road resurfacing, widening and redesigns.

New York City will receive the largest chunk of the total, nearly $20 million. Counties throughout the state will split $34 million, and the rest will go to cities and towns.

The money was announced Tuesday by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Another $100 million in funding will be announced in each of the next three years.
