Group Buys Land Near Lake George For Forest Preserve

Open Space Institute

A preservation group has purchased 836 acres near Lake George in the southeastern Adirondacks for eventual sale to New York state for incorporation into the Adirondack Forest Preserve.

The Open Space Institute says the land has been a high priority acquisition for decades and was purchased at the request of the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The property is known as Huckleberry Mountain Forest. It features a high plateau overlook of the surrounding mountains and the Hudson River.

It's within the Lake George Wild Forest, an area with many popular hiking trails to attractions such as Black Mountain, Shelving Rock and Prospect Mountain.

The state is expected to purchase the land from the Open Space Institute in about three years.
