Police have launched an investigation after a contractor unearthed bones in the backyard of a Schenectady home.
The Times Union says crime scene investigators were at the home Saturday.
Authorities say the contractor was installing a fence at the home on Monday when he found the bones buried about a foot underground.
Schenectady Police say the man took the bones home and showed them to his wife, who is a nurse. When she told him the remains might be human, he returned them to the house.
The homeowner, who was out of town, reported the find to police on Saturday.
Investigators say it is still unclear whether the bones are human.
They say detectives are still investigating and don't know how long the bones may have been buried.
