State Police Say Items Found In Remote Cabin May Be Linked To Fugitives

State Police Major Charles updates media on fugitive search 6-22-15

Authorities say they have discovered items in a cabin near Owls Head, a hamlet located about 20 miles west of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora that may be linked two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison in northern New York more than two weeks ago.  Law enforcement teams started pouring into the area Sunday night after being contacted by the cabin's owner.

State Police Maj. Charles Guess said Monday that the items have been sent to laboratories for DNA and other testing.  He would not confirm any link to fugitives David Sweat or Richard Matt.  “We have recovered specific items from that cabin.  We have forwarded them to the appropriate laboratories and reached a conclusive determination but we are not prepared to release that evidence at this time so we do not jeopardize the continuity of the investigation.”

New York State Police said Monday halted a search  in Allegany County in western New York after finding no evidence the escapees were there.
