Siena College adjuncts and visiting professors voted to form a collective bargaining unit affiliated with Service Employees International Union.
The vote was 86 to 27 among adjuncts - 16 to 5 for visiting profs. Siena becomes the second New York campus in a week (after Ithaca Collge) to green-light an adjunct union.
Organizers say the move indicates growing momentum for college faculty forming unions in New York. There have been other recent victories at The College of Saint Rose and Schenectady County Community College.
Supporters claim unionizing means job security and better pay, including access to retirement benefits.
