Authorities say a 43-year-old man is expected to recover after being shot by a New York State trooper when he refused orders to drop a rifle during a confrontation at his suburban Albany home.

Police say troopers responded to a 911 call around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday reporting a man with a gun at a home in the Saratoga County town of Clifton Park, 10 miles north of Albany.

Officials say when troopers arrived, they encountered Douglas Stewart III holding a loaded .30-caliber rifle in the yard of his home. Police say the troopers ordered him to drop the weapon. When he failed to comply, one of the troopers shot Stewart in the lower torso.

Stewart was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. He's expected to make a full recovery.
