New York conservation officials have established two new areas to access the Forest Preserve on recently purchased public land in the central Adirondacks, effectively opening more than a dozen miles of the upper Hudson River to canoeists.
The public access is provided through a temporary Interim Access Plan in advance of final classification of the lands by the Adirondack Park Agency.
Both areas are on the west side of the Hudson. The first is about 7 miles south of the hamlet of Newcomb. The second is about seven miles farther downstream, above the confluence of the Indian River.
The Hudson consists of moderate rapids and long flat-water stretches through the former timber company land, which was posted for decades against trespassing.
