NY Senator neutral (for now) in Knicks-Nets rivalry

U.S. Senate

He's a Brooklyn-born fan of the New York Knicks basketball team. But he's also a politician. WAMC's Dave Lucas reports on a difficult decision for a hometown guy...

For now, Sen. Charles Schumer says he hasn't chosen sides in the new NBA rivalry between the Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets.

But the Democrat says he has a plan. He says he'll attend the next Knicks-Nets game and "let my heart be my guide."

Schumer spoke the morning after the Nets defeated the Knicks 96-89 in overtime in the Barclays Center. It was the teams' first meeting since the Nets moved to Brooklyn this season from New Jersey.

Schumer said he'd originally planned to attend on Nov. 1. That game was postponed because of Superstorm Sandy, and Schumer said he could not make Monday's game.

Dave Lucas is WAMC’s Capital Region Bureau Chief. Born and raised in Albany, he’s been involved in nearly every aspect of local radio since 1981. Before joining WAMC, Dave was a reporter and anchor at WGY in Schenectady. In 2012, Dave received a Communicator Award of Distinction for his WAMC news story "Fail: The NYS Flood Panel," which explores whether the damage from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee could have been prevented or at least curbed. Dave began his radio career as a “morning personality” at WABY in Albany.
