Albany, NY – Well Jim Boeheim picks up another milestone win...
Last night in Cincinnati, Kris Joseph poured in 17, as Syracuse bounced back from its only loss this season, to beat Cincinnati 60-53. That's career win No. 877 for head coach Jim Boeheim, who moves ahead of Adolph Rupp into fourth place on the D-I coaching list.
In the only other Top 25 action last night, Kansas downed Texas A&M 64-54.
To the NBA, last night in Boston, Paul Pierce netted 19, leading the Celtics over the Magic 87-56. Orlando set franchise lows for points and field goals in the loss, making just 16 baskets all night.
Elsewhere, Chicago dumped New Jersey 110-95, Memphis got by Golden State 91-90, Dallas dropped Phoenix 93-87, Oklahoma City blew out Detroit 99-79, Portland pushed around Sacramento 101-89, Houston hammered Minnesota 107-92, San Antonio edged New Orleans 104-102, Atlanta held off Milwaukee 97-92, and Philadelphia pounded Washington 103-83.
To the ice, Detroit skated past St. Louis 3-1, Toronto blanked the Islanders 3-zip, Nashville beat Columbus 4-1, Edmonton got by San Jose 2-1, Los Angeles routed Ottawa 4-1, and Carolina nipped Winnipeg 2-1.
In other NHL news, President Barack Obama honored the Bruins for their 2011 Stanley Cup championship yesterday, hosting the six-time champions at a White House ceremony. Goalie Tim Thomas skipped the event for political reasons, saying the federal government has "grown out of control."
At the Australian Open, Kim Clijsters is through to the semifinals after posting a straight-set, upset win over top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 7-6. Clijsters will take on Victoria Azarenka in the semis.
In college football news, former Penn State coach Joe Paterno will be buried Wednesday, and his family has scheduled three days of public memorial events this week. Paterno died Sunday at age 85, less than three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
And in baseball news, the Mariners and Yankees have finalized their four-player trade, sending All-Star pitcher Michael Pineda and pitching prospect Jose Campos to the Yankees, in exchange for slugging prospect Jesus Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi.
Meanwhile, the Yankees say Jorge Posada will announce his retirement later today at Yankee Stadium. A five-time All Star, Posada helped lead the Yankees to five World Series titles, batting .273 with 275 home runs and 1,065 RBIs during his 17-year career.
