Albany, NY – State University of New York has embarked on an ambitious residence-hall improvement program involving 22 of its 29 campuses... Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

With enrollment increasing at 4-year colleges, the SUNY system is adding about 2-thousand new beds to expand on-campus residential facilities at a number of schools in its network.

SUNY vice chancellor for financial services and chief financial officer Brian Hutzley points out that these days more and more students prefer to live in dorms rather than in off-campus housing.

SUNY Cortland's public relations director Fred Pierce says the college is building a 224-bed residence hall. Over at Binghamton University, spokeswoman Gail Glover says the school has opened three new energy-efficient buildings utilizing "green" technology.

All of the residence hall projects are included in SUNY's $1.69 billion capital budget request for the 2012-13 state fiscal year, which begins April 1st.
