Bobby Valentine will be introduced later today at a news conference in Fenway Park. The 61-year-old Valentine replaces Terry Francona, who led the Red Sox to World Series titles in 2004 and 2007, but also oversaw one of the greatest late-season collapses in big league history, earlier this year.
To Top 25 college hoops, North Carolina edged Wisconsin 60-57, Kansas crushed Florida Atlantic 77-54, Pittsburgh got by Duquesne 80-69, UNLV beat UC Santa Barbara 94-88 in double OT, Gonzaga blew out Notre Dame 73-53, and Texas A&M downed Alcorn St. 56-44.
On the Women's side, Baylor blitzed Texas Southern 91-39, U-Conn hammered Towson 92-31, and Rutgers cruised past Temple 71-50.
In other college basketball news, federal agents have searched the campus office of former Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine as part of the investigation of child molestation allegations against him.
To college football, where a lawsuit filed yesterday claims former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky abused a boy more than 100 times and threatened to harm his family to keep him quiet. The suit was filed by a new accuser, who is not part of the criminal case involving Sandusky.
In other news, Mike Leach is the new head football coach at Washington State. Leach, who posted an 84-43 record at Texas Tech, was fired in 2009 amid allegations he mistreated a player with a concussion.
In NBA news, players will be allowed back inside team facilities later this morning. Clubs can also begin speaking with agents today, although no deals can be offered, and no contracts can be signed before December 9th.
To the NHL, in Toronto, Milan Lucic scored twice, as the Bruins doubled up the Maple Leafs 6-3. Boston finished the month of November 12-0-1.
Elsewhere, Detroit dumped Tampa Bay 4-2, Colorado embarrassed New Jersey 6-1, Anaheim held off Montreal 4-1, and Minnesota skated past Edmonton 3-2 in a shootout.
And sad news out of Stanford, assistant football coach and four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Chester McGlockton has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 42. McGlockton played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos and Jets.
