Albany, NY – Penn State says assistant coach Mike McQueary won't work the Nittany Lions game on Saturday, because "multiple threats" have been made against him.

The Penn State football program is in turmoil following the firing of longtime coach Joe Paterno, brought down in a scandal involving child sex-abuse allegations, against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. McQueary testified to a grand jury that he encountered Sandusky in the Penn State showers with a 10-year-old boy in 2002.

Meanwhile, Joe Paterno may have lost more than his job: Pennsylvania's two senators, Pat Toomey and Bob Casey, say they are rescinding their support for Paterno's nomination for the medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

To the NFL... Last night in San Diego, Michael Bush rumbled a season-high 157 yards, pacing the Raiders to a 24-17 win over the Chargers. At 5-4, Oakland now holds a half-game lead over Kansas City in the AFC West.

To Top 25 college football, 10th ranked Virginia Tech dumped 20th ranked Georgia Tech 37-26, and 11th ranked Houston hammered unranked Tulane 73-17.

In baseball news, the Venezuelan government has sent top investigators to hunt for Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos, whose abduction has shaken Venezuela's elite athletes, and focused attention on the nation's sharp rise in kidnappings for ransom.

In NBA news, Day 134 of the lockout: Following 11 hours of bargaining last night, the players broke off negotiations with the league, saying there had not been enough progress to get a deal done.

Union president Derek Fisher says the league's latest offer, which was based on the possibility of a 72-game schedule beginning December 15th, doesn't address all the necessary system issues that are important to the players. NBA Commissioner David Stern said there's really nothing left to negotiate.

In the NHL, Boston doubled up Edmonton 6-3, Toronto skated past St. Louis 3-2 in a shootout, Chicago downed Columbus 6-3, Florida cruised past Winnipeg 5-2, Montreal edged Phoenix 3-2 in OT, Colorado rallied to beat the Islanders 4-3, San Jose dropped Minnesota 3-1, and Vancouver got by Los Angeles 3-2.

And in golf, don't look now, but Tiger Woods sits atop the leaderboard for the first time in nearly a year, after firing a 5-under 67 opening round at the Australian Open.
