Albany, NY – New York's top judges are scheduled to hear testimony from the state attorney general's office and the New York State Bar Association about the legal needs of New York's poor.
According to court administrators, Monday's public hearing in Albany is part of an ongoing series to address "the continuing unmet need" for representation in civil matters among low-income residents.
Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman is expected to report their findings to the Legislature, along with work by a judicial task force on expanding access to legal services.
Legal needs range from facing mortgage foreclosures and evictions to debt problems, domestic issues and public benefits claims.
