New Paltz, NY – As many New Yorkers cope with devastation caused by tropical storms Irene and Lee, along with the continued threat of flooding, federal emergency management officials are warning of another danger: Scam artists could soon appear in your community attempting to take advantage of your vulnerability as a disaster survivor. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.
A warning from FEMA and municipalities that con-artists may strike in your community : Some of these scammers have been observed making rounds carrying clipboards with official-looking forms; authorities warn that this is no proof these people represent any state, federal or voluntary agency serving those affected by the disaster.
Town Supervisor Korey O'Hara told the Catskill Daily Mail that Prattsville, which suffered the worst damage from Irene, has already been targeted by questionable or disreputable contractors. Ten miles to the east across Route 23, Windham Supervisor Stephen Walker says that so far, scammers have steered clear of his town.
FEMA officials are urging all storm victims to exercise caution when dealing with contractors during ongoing rebuilding efforts. They say if you're not sure WHO you are talking to, if you've never heard of -or- if you are suspicious about the organization they claim to represent, do NOT reveal any personal information. FEMA-contracted inspectors call to schedule an appointment before visiting a home. The inspectors always wear a photo ID and know the applicant's name and registration number.
FEMA's Chris McKniff explains the agency has two sets of groups out in the field interacting with residents. One being the community relations steam, the other FEMA inspectors.
FEMA officials stress that the agency never charges for disaster assistance. There is no such thing as an expedited fee, registration fee, an assistance fee, and they warn ANYONE who claims they can get FEMA to your site faster by paying a fee, is telling you a lie!
