Albany, NY – Well the Rays have moved within two games of the Red Sox...
Last night in the Bronx, B.J. Upton tripled, homered, scored four times and drove in three, as Tampa Bay tattooed a watered-down Yankees squad 15-8, one night after New York clinched the American League East title. Boston's lead over Tampa Bay in the AL Wild card race is just two games, and its lead over the Angels is now three - after the Halos fell to Toronto 4-3 in 12.
The Red Sox open up a three-game, weekend set against the Yankees in the Bronx, and the Rays will be back home hosting the Blue Jays.
Elsewhere in the AL, Oakland edged Texas 4-3, Minnesota got by Seattle 3-2, Baltimore bounced Detroit 6-5, and Cleveland crushed the White Sox 11-2.
Over to the NL, in St. Louis, Willie Harris' two-run single highlighted a six-run ninth, as the Mets rallied to beat the Cardinals 8-6. The loss drops St. Louis two games behind idle Atlanta in the NL wild card race.
Elsewhere, the Dodgers dumped San Francisco 8-2, Washington whipped Philadelphia 6-1, and Houston outlasted Colorado 9-6.
In NFL news, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick returned to practice yesterday, just four days after he suffered a concussion. His participation indicates that he's been cleared to return to football activities. The Eagles host the Giants on Sunday.
In NBA news, sources say the NBA plans to cancel training camps and some preseason games today, after failing to reach a new labor deal with its players. Training camps were expected to begin October 3rd.
And in golf, Keegan Bradley has the lead after the first round of the Tour Championship. The reigning PGA champion tore it up on the back nine, shooting bogey-free golf with four birdies and a 6-under 64 total.
