In Boston, the Red Sox continue to tread water in the Wild Card race, after splitting a doubleheader with Baltimore. Boston dropped the opener 6-5, but won the nightcap 18-9. The Red Sox lead idle Tampa Bay by two games in the wild card race, but trail the Yankees by five in the division.
In other AL action, Toronto edged the Angels 3-2 in 10.
Over to the NL, St. Louis got by Philadelphia 4-3, Florida dumped Atlanta 6-5, Arizona blanked Pittsburgh 1-0, the Cubs topped Milwaukee 5-2, San Diego hammered Colorado 8-2, and Houston held off Cincinnati 3-2.
On Monday Night Football last night, Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes as the Giants cruised past St. Louis 28-16. New York improves to 1-1 on the season.
In other NFL news, Eagles quarterback Michael Vick sustained a concussion in Sunday's loss to Atlanta, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo suffered a fractured rib and a punctured lung in Sunday's comeback win over the 49ers, and Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles blew out his left knee in Sunday's loss to Detroit - Charles is done for the year.
And in NASCAR, Tony Stewart has snapped a 32-race losing streak by winning the opening race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
