Albany, NY – Well the reeling Red Sox have lost again...
Last night in Boston, Toronto tagged Daniel Bard for three runs in the eighth, as the Blue Jays rallied to beat the Red Sox 5-4. Boston has lost six of seven, but maintains a four game lead over the Rays in the Wild Card race.
The Yankees failed to capitalize on the Red Sox loss. In Seattle, Cory Wade served up a walk-off blast to light-hitting Luis Rodriguez in the 12th, as the Mariners downed the Yankees 2-1. New York remains four games ahead of Boston in the division.
In other AL action, Baltimore bounced Tampa Bay 6-2, Texas pummeled Cleveland 9-1, the Angels topped Oakland 4-1, Kansas City beat Minnesota 7-3, and Detroit rallied past the White Sox 6-5 - the Tigers have won 12 straight.
Over to the NL, where for the fifth straight year, the Phillies are in the playoffs... Roy Halladay fired a complete game, six-hitter, as Philadelphia shutout Houston 1-0. The Phillies become the first team in 20-11 to clinch a postseason berth.
In Queens, Brad Peacock combined with three relievers on a four hitter, as the Nationals blanked the Mets 2-0. Washington and New York are now tied for third place in the NL East.
In San Francisco, former Met and current Giant Carlos Beltran homered twice, giving him 300 for his career, as the Giants beat the Padres 3-1.
Elsewhere, the Dodgers dumped Arizona 3-2, Atlanta got by Florida 4-1, Cincinnati cruised past the Cubs 7-2, St. Louis held off Pittsburgh 3-2, and Colorado dropped Milwaukee 6-2.
In NFL news, sources say the Giants have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Brandon Stokley.
And in NHL news, the Islanders and John Tavares have agreed on a contract extension, worth $33 million over six years.
