Last night in the Bronx, the Yankees survived another shaky outing by closer Mariano Rivera, as they hung on to beat Baltimore 11-10. Catching phenom Jesus Montero homered twice, and Robinson Cano belted his third grand slam of the season.
In Toronto, the Red Sox and Blue Jays certainly labored on Labor Day, going eleven scoreless innings, before Dan Wheeler served up a walk-off shot to Brett Lawrie, giving the Jays a 1-0 win. Boston slips 2 1/2 games behind New York in the division.
In other AL action, the Angels dumped Seattle 7-3, Detroit doubled up Cleveland 4-2, Tampa Bay topped Texas 5-1, Kansas City cruised past Oakland 11-6, and the White Sox swept a double header from Minnesota, taking the opener 2-1, and the nightcap 4-0.
Over to the NL, in Florida, Javier Vazquez allowed one run on six hits over seven innings, as the Marlins beat the Mets 9-3.
In Philadelphia, Cliff Lee went the distance, scattering five hits, as the Phillies crushed Atlanta 9-0.
Elsewhere, Arizona edged Colorado 10-7, San Francisco downed San Diego 7-2, Milwaukee dropped St. Louis 4-1, Pittsburgh held off Houston 3-1, Washington whipped the Dodgers 7-2, and the Cubs got by Cincinnati 4-3.
In NFL news, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been told by doctors not to practice, and will be listed as doubtful for the season opener against Houston.
In college football last night, Maryland topped short-handed Miami 32-24. The Hurricanes played without eight players, including quarterback Jacory Harris, who were all suspended for receiving improper benefits.
In tennis, at the U.S. Open, Novak Djokovic, Janko Tipsarevic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Roger Federer have breezed into the quarterfinals.
On the Women's side, Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams won their fourth round matches. Seventh-seed Francesca Schiavone was eliminated.
