Ausable Forks, NY – While dump trucks are hauling fill to fix collapsed roads and earth movers are clearing debris, homeowners are using shovels to push mud and silt out of their homes. In Ausable Forks, Sierra Serino laughs about how her flowers survived the flooding while she shovels mud out of her house.

Several miles down Route 9N in Upper Jay, a small, quaint building is the home of the Wells Memorial Library. On Tuesday, volunteers are throwing silt-covered books onto the mud-caked front lawn. Board President Marie-Anne Azar Ward says nearly a third of their books were lost to the flooding.
