Last night in Baltimore, Nick Swisher's two-run shot, his sixth homer in seven games, powered the Yankees over the Orioles 3-2. New York pulls within a game and a half of idle Boston, and the two rivals open up a three-game set at Fenway tonight.
Elsewhere in the AL, Cleveland edged Oakland 2-1, the White Sox blanked Minnesota 3-0, Kansas City outlasted Detroit 9-5, Seattle dumped the Angels 5-3, and Toronto beat Tampa Bay 7-3.
Over to the NL, where the Mets swept a doubleheader from the Marlins. In the opener, R.A. Dickey scattered seven hits over seven scoreless innings, as New York downed Florida 2-1. In the nightcap, David Wright went 2 for 4, driving in two, as the Mets finished off the day-night sweep, 5-1.
Elsewhere, Arizona topped Colorado 5-1, the Cubs shutout San Francisco 7-0, Philadelphia got by Cincinnati 3-2, the Dodgers dropped San Diego 4-1, and Houston held off Pittsburgh 7-4.
In NFL news, two years ago, Michael Vick was a man without an NFL team. Today, he's a one hundred million dollar man. The Eagles and their quarterback have agreed to a six-year contract, worth $100 million, including roughly $40 million guaranteed.
In NFL preseason action last night, the Jets trounced the Giants 17-3.
In NBA news, Javaris Crittenton has been arrested in Southern California to face a murder charge in an Atlanta shooting.
In tennis, the U.S. Open is underway... On the Men's side, Roger Federer, Mardy Fish, Tomas Berdych were among the opening round winners.
On the Women's side, reigning Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova was bounced by Alexandra Dulgheru in straight sets. Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Vera Zvonareva, Marion Bartoli and Sam Stosur cruised into Round Two.
