Albany, NY – Well it was a historic night for the Yankees...

Last night in the Bronx, Robinson Cano, Russell Martin, and Curtis Granderson all hit grand slams, in a wet, wild 22-9 romp over Oakland. The Yankees become the first team in major league history to hit three grand slams in a game.

In Texas, Adrian Gonzalez homered twice, powering the Red Sox over the Rangers 6-0. A-Gone has hit five dingers in his last four games for Boston, who continues to lead New York by one game in the division.

Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit blanked Tampa Bay 2-0, Baltimore bounced Minnesota 6-1, and Kansas City outlasted Toronto 9-6.

Over to the NL, Atlanta routed the Cubs 8-3, Houston held off San Francisco 3-1, Arizona whipped Washington 8-1, and St. Louis doubled up Pittsburgh 8-4.

In other baseball news, Jim Thome has accepted a trade from Minnesota, to his former team, the Cleveland Indians.

Former Mets and Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra is in hot water again. Dykstra has been arrested for allegedly exposing himself to women he met on Craigslist, on several occasions between 2009 and 2011. Dykstra separately faces car theft, drug possession and bankruptcy fraud charges.

The death of former Cy Young Award winner Mike Flanagan has been ruled a suicide. The 59-year old died Wednesday of a gunshot wound to the head.

In college football news, Miami has determined that eight football players, including quarterback Jacory Harris, are believed to have committed NCAA violations by associating with booster Nevin Shapiro, and have been declared ineligible.

And if you're planning on attending any sporting events this weekend, you better check the schedule. Baseball games, soccer matches, and golf tournaments have all been rearranged, in advance of Hurricane Irene, who's expected to strike the East Coast this weekend.

I'm Tristan O'Neill, WAMC News.
