Plattsburgh, NY – Following an emergency session of his cabinet today, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a series of actions in preparation for Hurricane Irene. Some of the moves will affect outdoor recreation in the state. The Department of Environmental Conservation has advised everyone to stay off trails in the Adirondack Park and Catskill Preserve. The agency will also close and evacuate all Adirondack and Catskill campgrounds by noon on Saturday. Following a meeting finalizing the state's emergency plans, DEC Commissioner Joe Martens says there are two reasons for their moves.

The Adirondack Mountain Club has posted the DEC warning on it's website and is advising thier members to stay off the trails. Executive Director Neil Woodworth says the warning is critical because of the severity of the predicted winds and rains.

The Green Mountains of Vermont host parts of the Long trail and the Appalachian Trail, where many long distance hikers traverse. Green Mountain Club Executive Director Will Wiquist says they are working with the US Forest Service to get the work out to get off the trails this weekend.

All New Hampshire state parks and historical sites, including all state beaches on the seacoast, will close on Saturday.
