Albany, NY – Well the Red Sox are back in first...

Last night in Texas, Jacoby Ellsbury, Adrian Gonzalez, and Carl Crawford all went deep, as the Red Sox pounded the Rangers 13-2. Josh Beckett and three relievers combined on a six-hitter.

In the Bronx, Coco Crisp 4-4, with two home runs and five RBIs, as Oakland edged the Yankees 6-4 in 10. The Red Sox win, combined with the Yankees loss, means Boston has reclaimed the top spot in the division.

In other AL action, the Angels blanked the White Sox 8-0, Toronto topped Kansas City 4-3, Seattle slammed Cleveland 9-2, Tampa Bay downed Detroit 3-2, and Baltimore bounced Minnesota 6-1.

Over to the NL, in Philadelphia, Nick Evans and David Wright both homered to power the Mets over the Phillies 7-4, snapping New York's five-game losing skid.

Elsewhere, Arizona doubled up Washington 4-2, San Francisco dropped San Diego 2-1, Colorado held off Houston 7-6 in 10, Pittsburgh blanked Milwaukee 2-0, the Dodgers dumped St. Louis 9-4, the Cubs beat Atlanta 3-2, and Florida split a doubleheader with Cincinnati, taking the opener 6-5, but dropping the nightcap 3-2.

In NFL news, the Colts are getting some quarterback insurance, signing veteran QB Kerry Collins to a one year deal, just in case Peyton Manning's recovery from neck surgery lingers into the season.

In college basketball news, the NCAA has announced that it has hit former Tennessee Men's Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl with a three-year, show-cause penalty. What the ruling means is that before Pearl can be hired, a school must tell the NCAA why it wants him, and be prepared to face its own penalties for giving him a job.

And sad news out of Baltimore, Mike Flanagan, a former Cy Young Award winner and part of the Orioles 1983 World Series championship team, has died. He was 59.

I'm Tristan O'Neill, WAMC News.
