Albany, NY – Well there's still no breathing room atop the American League East...
Last night in the Bronx, Brandon Allen hit a pair of tape-measure shots to power Oakland to a 6-5 win over the Yankees. New York scored all five runs over the final two frames, but their rally fell just short, when Nick Swisher flied out to deep center with the bases loaded to end the game.
In Texas, Adrian Gonzalez homered twice to pace Boston to an 11-4 win over Texas. The Red Sox win, coupled with the Yankees loss, ties things up atop the division with just over five weeks remaining in the season.
In other AL action, the Angels nipped the White Sox 5-4, Detroit doubled up Tampa Bay 2-1, Kansas City topped Toronto 6-4, Minnesota crushed Baltimore 8-1, and Cleveland split a double-header with Seattle, taking the opener 7-5, but dropping the nightcap 12-7.
Over to the NL, in Philadelphia, John Mayberry Jr. and Shane Victorino each homered and drove in three runs, sparking Philadelphia to a 9-4 win over the Mets.
Elsewhere, Arizona blanked Washington 2-0, the Dodgers blasted St. Louis 13-2, San Diego edged San Francisco 7-5, Colorado held off Houston 8-6, Atlanta got by the Cubs 5-4, Milwaukee hammered Pittsburgh 11-4, and Cincinnati outlasted Florida 8-6.
In NFL news, Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson will play Thursday night against Cleveland, just weeks after he collapsed and suffered a seizure at practice. The Steelers and linebacker Lawrence Timmons have agreed to a new six-year deal worth $50 million, and veteran running back Larry Johnson has signed with Miami.
And in college basketball news, Tennessee women's coach Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, which could lead to Alzheimer's. In a statement released by the university, the Hall of Fame coach said she plans to coach during the upcoming season, but may have some "limitations." Summitt has coached 37 seasons at Tennessee and has 1,071 career victories, including eight national championships.
