Albany, NY – Well with just over five weeks to go in the baseball season, it continues to be a close race atop the American League East...

Last night in Minnesota, Curtis Granderson belted an inside-the-park home run in support of Ivan Nova, who scattered five hits over seven innings, as the Yankees shutout the Twins 3-0. A-Rod went 0-5 in his return to the lineup since undergoing knee surgery in mid-July.

In Kansas City, Jon Lester allowed three hits over six plus innings, as the Red Sox flushed the Royals 6-1. Boston lingers just a half game behind New York in the AL East.

Elsewhere in the AL, the White Sox blasted Texas 10-0, Detroit outlasted Cleveland 8-7, the Angels bounced Baltimore 7-1, Tampa Bay topped Seattle 8-7, and Toronto blanked Oakland 1-0.

Over to the NL, in Queens, Yovani Gallardo tossed seven strong innings, as Milwaukee dropped the Mets 6-2.

Elsewhere, St. Louis got by the Cubs 6-2, Atlanta blanked Arizona 1-0, Washington edged Philadelphia 5-4, San Francisco nipped Houston 6-4 in 11, Cincinnati held off Pittsburgh 5-4, Colorado clipped the Dodgers 5-3, and San Diego beat Florida 4-3.

In other baseball news, Giants closer Brian Wilson has been placed on the DL with inflammation in his right elbow.

In NFL preseason action, the Jets soared past the Bengals 27-7, and the Chargers dumped the Cowboys 20-7.

In other NFL news, police have interviewed witnesses and are looking for suspects after two men were shot and wounded following the 49ers-Raiders preseason game. The NFL and the mayors of the two cities have jointly called for an end to "intimidation" and acts of violence at sporting events.

And in NASCAR, points-leader Kyle Busch pulled away from Jimmie Johnson after a restart with two laps to go, to capture the Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.
