Albany, NY – Well Steve Stricker's record-tying performance has him atop the leaderboard, after one round of the PGA Championship.
Stricker tied the lowest round ever in a major with a 7-under-par 63 that puts him two shots clear of Jerry Kelly. Four-time champ Tiger Woods fired a 7-over 77. It's his second-worst score ever in a major. Woods is tied for 129th and in serious danger of missing the cut.
U.S. Open champ Rory McIlroy shot an even-par 70 despite suffering a hand injury, and Phil Mickelson settled for a 1-over 71.
To baseball, in the Bronx, Robinson Cano belted a grand slam with two outs in the seventh, propelling the Yankees to a 6-5 win over the Angels. New York pulls within one game of the idle Red Sox in the division.
Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit downed Cleveland 4-3, the White Sox doubled up Baltimore 6-3, Tampa Bay topped Kansas City 4-1, and Oakland clobbered Toronto 10-3.
Over to the NL, in Queens, Cameron Maybin homered and stole two bases before scoring the tie-breaking run on a Ruben Tejada error, as San Diego edged the Mets 3-2.
Elsewhere, Arizona rallied past Houston 8-5 in 10, St. Louis dumped Milwaukee 5-2, Cincinnati dropped Colorado 2-1, and the Cubs nipped Washington 4-3.
In NFL news, the preseason officially got underway last night. Philadelphia held off Baltimore 13-6, Seattle got by San Diego 24-17, Dallas edged Denver 24-23, Arizona downed Oakland 24-18, and New England blitzed Jacksonville 47-12. The Giants, Jets and Bills kick off their preseasons tomorrow.
In other news, the Steelers have signed wide receiver Jericho Cotchery, who was released by the Jets last week.
And in cycling, Tour de France champion Cadel Evans says cycling deserves more credit for its efforts to combat the use of performance-enhancing drugs.
