Albany, NY – Well Boston's lead in the American League East has dwindled to just a game and a half...

Last night in Minnesota, Jim Thome's tie-breaking double highlighted a three-run eighth, as the Twins beat the Red Sox 5-2.

In the Bronx, Curtis Granderson homered twice, plating four, as the Yankees hammered the Angels 9-3. New York pulls within one and a half games of the division lead.

Elsewhere in the AL, Seattle sank Texas 4-3, Cleveland crushed Detroit 10-3, Baltimore bounced the White 6-4 in 10, Tampa Bay rallied past Kansas City 8-7, and Toronto dumped Oakland 8-4.

Over to the NL, in Queens, Wil Venable went 4 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored, as San Diego dumped the Mets 9-5.

Elsewhere, Philadelphia outlasted the Dodgers 9-8, Pittsburgh pounded San Francisco 9-2, Arizona doubled up Houston 6-3, Milwaukee dropped St. Louis 5-1, Cincinnati edged Colorado 3-2, the Cubs beat Washington 4-2, and Atlanta downed Florida 6-2... Braves' second baseman Dan Uggla has now hit safely in 31 consecutive games.

In NFL news, football is back. The NFL officially kicks off its preseason tonight with five games on the schedule, including the Jaguars in New England, and the Ravens in Philly.

In other NFL news, the Patriots and guard Logan Mankins have agreed on a six year deal, and former Giants wide out Steve Smith has signed a one-year deal with the Eagles.

In the courtroom, Rasheed Davis, the man who plead guilty to arranging a sexual encounter between an underage prostitute and former Giants star Lawrence Taylor, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

And in soccer news, the U.S. men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Mexico in Jurgen Klinsmann's debut as head coach of the American squad. Robbie Rogers scored late in the second half, giving the U.S a draw in the international friendly.
