Albany, NY – The NYS Education Department released the results of math and English standardized tests given to all students in grades 3- 8 in May. The statewide results show that just less than 53 percent of students met the English standard while sixty-three percent met or exceeded the math standard. Education Department officials are concerned about the overall low performance and stagnate progress. Education Department Spokesman Tom Dunn says the results are unsatisfactory. Peru Central School Superintendent Dr. Thomas Stapleford is not surprised to see the level score results. NYS Association of Small City School Districts Executive Director Robert Biggerstaff isn't surprised that test scores have settled. He cites numerous districts that are struggling with budget cuts and says there is a direct correlation between cuts in state aid and drops in student performance. Alliance for Quality Education Communications Director Nikki Jones says the amount of funding a school receives directly correlates to a positive outcome.
