Albany, NY – Well NFL owners have overwhelmingly approved a new collective bargaining agreement...
Thirty-one of thirty-two owners voted to accept the 10-year deal in an attempt to end the four-month-old lockout. But player reps did not vote on the deal in a conference call last night, because they did not have a copy of the full proposal. NFL Players Association head DeMaurice Smith says there are still outstanding issues to be resolved and that the there was no agreement between the NFL and its players. ESPN reports this morning that a vote among all 32 player reps appears likely later today.
To baseball, last night in Tampa, James Shields scattered six hits over seven and two thirds, outdueling Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia, as the Rays dumped the Yanks 2-1.
Elsewhere in the AL, the Angels blanked Texas 1-0, Detroit got by Minnesota 6-2, and Toronto sank Seattle 7-5.
Over to the NL, in Queens, Albert Pujols belted a first-inning, two-run shot, as the Cardinals cruised past the Mets 6-2. Mets third baseman David Wright is expected to come off the D.L. today.
Elsewhere, Arizona blanked Milwaukee 4-0, San Diego dropped Florida 5-3, and Atlanta outlasted Colorado 9-6.
In other baseball news, two new suspects have been arrested in the beating of a Giants fan outside Dodger Stadium. Giants fan Bryan Stow was nearly fatally beaten outside the stadium after attending the season opener between the Giants and Dodgers.
In NBA news, a week after signing Nets point guard Deron Williams, the Turkish basketball club Besiktas is in talks with Kobe Bryant's representatives, about the possibility of the All-Star playing in Turkey during the NBA lockout.
And in cycling, Luxembourg's Andy Schleck won the 18th Stage of the Tour de France, moving up from fourth to second in the overall standings. Frenchman Thomas Voeckler finished more than two minutes behind Schleck, but retained the race lead by just 15 seconds. The race ends Sunday in Paris.
