Albany, NY – Well Northern Ireland has another major champion in golf...
Darren Clarke held off brief challenges from Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to claim the British Open championship. Clarke shot an even-par 70 over the final 18, and finished three shots clear of Mickelson and Johnson. The 42-year-old is the third golfer from Northern Ireland to capture a major title in the last six majors.
In soccer, the U.S. blew a 1-0 second-half lead and a 2-1 advantage in extra time, before losing to Japan 3-1 on penalty kicks in the Women's World Cup final. Japan is the first Asian nation to win the World Cup.
To baseball, in Tampa, where it took 16 innings, but Dustin Pedroia's two-out RBI single snapped a scoreless tie, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 win over the Rays. Josh Becket and five relievers combined on a three-hitter for Boston, who's won 8 of 9.
In Toronto, Phil Hughes allowed two runs on four hits over six innings, as the Yankees downed the Blue Jays 7-2, earning a split of their four-game series. New York continues to trail Boston by a game and a half.
Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit topped the White Sox 4-3, Baltimore bounced Cleveland 8-3, Minnesota edged Kansas City 4-3, Oakland routed the Angels 9-1, and Texas got by Seattle 3-1.
Over to the NL, in Queens, where Michael Martinez belted his first major league home run and knocked in four, as the Phillies knocked around the Mets 8-5.
Elsewhere, Cincinnati rallied past St. Louis 3-1, Milwaukee edged Colorado 4-3, Pittsburgh dropped Houston 7-5 in 11, Atlanta outlasted Washington 9-8, Arizona held off the Dodgers 4-1, San Francisco nipped San Diego 4-3, and Florida beat the Cubs 7-5.
And in cycling, British sprinter Mark Cavendish edged American rider Tyler Farrar to win the 15th stage of the Tour de France. Thomas Voeckler of France retains the yellow jersey.
