Albany, NY – Well the U.S. has reached the Women's World Cup semifinals...

Down a player and trailing a goal late in the second half, Abby Wambach headed home the equalizer, and the United States rallied to knockout powerhouse Brazil 5-3 on penalty kicks. The Americans will take on France on Wednesday. Japan will face Sweden in the other semifinal.

To baseball... In the Bronx, where CC Sabathia became the majors' first 13-game winner. Both Sabathia and Rays pitcher James Shields went the distance, firing four-hitters, but two throwing errors in the seventh gave the Yankees a 1-0 win over Tampa Bay. But some bad news out of Yankees camp... third baseman Alex Rodriguez will undergo surgery today to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee. A-Rod will be out 4 to 6 weeks.

In Boston, Marco Scutaro, Dustin Pedroia, and Kevin Youkilis all homered in a four-run second, as the Red Sox dumped Baltimore 8-6. Boston's won six straight.

Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit doubled up Kansas City 2-1, Toronto trounced Cleveland 7-1, Texas blanked Oakland 2-0, the Angels topped Seattle 4-2, and Minnesota held off the White Sox 6-3.

Over to the NL, in San Francisco, Matt Cain scattered five hits over six shutout innings, as the Giants finished off the Mets 4-2.

Elsewhere, Philadelphia clobbered Atlanta 14-1, St. Louis got by Arizona 4-2, Milwaukee edged Cincinnati 4-3, Pittsburgh pounded the Cubs 9-1, Washington blanked Colorado 2-0, Florida nipped Houston 5-4, and the Dodgers downed San Diego 4-1.

And in cycling, Spanish rider Luis Leon Sanchez won a crash-marred ninth stage of the Tour de France. Frenchman Thomas Voeckler finished second, and took the overall race leader's yellow jersey from Thor Hushovd of Norway. Spanish rider Juan Antonio Flecha was hit by a car late in the stage and took down Dutch rider Johnny Hoogerland with him as he flew sideways off his saddle. Defending champ Alberto Contador also fell early on, but the Spaniard was unharmed and rode on.
