Albany, NY – Well the Yankee captain inches closer to a milestone...
Last night in the Bronx, Jeff Niemann scattered six hits over 7 and 1/3 innings, as Tampa Bay shut down the Yankees 5-1. But one of those hits, Derek Jeter's lead-off double, was his 2,998th career hit, leaving the Yankee captain two hits shy of becoming the 28th major leaguer, and the first Yankee ever, to reach the 3,000 hit plateau.
In Boston, Dustin Pedroia went 2 for 5, including a homer and three RBIs, as the Red Sox blasted Baltimore 10-4. Boston leads the American League East now by a half game over the Yanks.
Elsewhere in the AL, Minnesota downed the White Sox 6-2, Cleveland rallied past Toronto 5-4, the Angels dropped Seattle 5-1, Detroit got by Kansas City 3-1, and Texas blanked Oakland 6-0.
Over to the NL, in Los Angeles, Clayton Kershaw fanned nine over eight scoreless innings, pitching the Dodgers past the Mets 6-0. Before the game, New York placed shortstop Jose Reyes on the 15-day DL with a strained left hamstring.
Elsewhere, Atlanta doubled up Colorado 6-3, Florida shut out Houston 5-0, the Cubs stunned Washington 10-9, Milwaukee held off Cincinnati 5-4, San Francisco edged San Diego 2-1, and Arizona beat St. Louis 4-1.
In other baseball news, Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino and White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko have been elected to the All-Star team, filling the final two roster slots.
In cycling, Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen won a rain-splattered sixth stage of the Tour de France, while fellow countrymen Thor Hushovd retained the overall leader's yellow jersey.
In NFL news, Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins has retired after 16 NFL seasons. The former Giant's signal caller threw for over 40,000 yards and 206 touchdowns in 195 career games.
And John Mackey, a Hall of Fame player for the Baltimore Colts who had battled with dementia, has died. Mackey was 69.
