Albany, NY – Well the Yankee captain is three hits away from three thousand...
Last night in Cleveland, Derek Jeter's eighth inning double was his 2,997th career base hit, but unfortunately for the Yanks, that was only one of just three hits surrendered by Justin Masterson. The Indians right-hander fanned six over eight scoreless innings, as the Tribe got by the Yanks 5-3.
In Boston, Tim Wakefield scattered nine hits over seven innings, pitching the Red Sox over Toronto 6-4. Boston lingers just a half game back of the Yankees in the American League East.
Elsewhere in the AL, Texas trounced Baltimore 13-5, Detroit dumped the Angels 5-4, Tampa Bay blasted Minnesota 12-5, Kansas City downed the White Sox 4-1, and Oakland blanked Seattle 2-0.
Over to the NL... In Los Angeles, Carlos Beltran ripped a pair of doubles and scored twice, as the Mets topped the Dodgers 5-3. New York's won four straight.
Elsewhere, Cincinnati dropped St. Louis 9-8 in 13, Florida edged Philadelphia 7-6 in 10, Washington got by the Cubs 5-4, Atlanta hammered Colorado 9-1, Houston pounded Pittsburgh 8-2, Milwaukee held off Arizona 3-1, and San Francisco beat San Diego 6-5 in 14.
In other baseball news, Roger Clemens' perjury trial has opened with both sides raising the prospect of calling a roster of former baseball stars as witnesses and the judge angrily criticizing Congress for withholding an audiotape of Clemens' deposition at the heart of the case.
In soccer news, Sweden beat the U.S. 2-1 in Women's World Cup play. The loss means the American team will play Brazil in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
In cycling, Mark Cavendish won a windy and crash-marred fifth stage of the Tour de France. Norway's Thor Hushovd retains the overall leader's yellow jersey. Defending champ Alberto Contador fell in one pileup, and RadioShack rider Janez Brajkovic was forced to quit the race after crashing in another.
And the South Korean city of Pyeongchang has been awarded the 2018 Winter Olympics, after failing in two previous attempts.
