Albany, NY – Well Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols will miss at least a month...
The three-time NL MVP will be out 4-6 weeks after fracturing his left forearm during Sunday's 5-4 win over Kansas City. St. Louis manager Tony La Russa joked that he wanted to "find a place to cry" after learning the news.
Last night on the diamond in Cincinnati, rookie Ivan Nova allowed one run on four hits over eight innings, pitching the Yankees past the Reds 5-3. The Yanks have won 9 of 11.
In Boston, Adrian Gonzalez ripped a single, a double and knocked in three, during a 10-run seventh, as the Red Sox blasted San Diego 14-5. Boston's won 14 of 16.
Elsewhere in Interleague play - the Angels edged Florida 2-1, Atlanta blanked Toronto 2-0, the Dodgers shutout Detroit 4-0, Tampa Bay doubled up Milwaukee 8-4, Baltimore blitzed Pittsburgh 8-3, Colorado outlasted Cleveland 8-7, the Cubs dumped the White Sox 6-3, and Texas thumped Houston 8-3.
In other baseball news, the Marlins have hired 80-year-old Jack McKeon as manager, replacing Edwin Rodriguez, who quit on Sunday. Unfortunately for Florida and their suffering fans, that was all that changed. The Marlins have lost 11 straight, and are 1 and 19 in June. McKeon becomes the second-oldest manager in major league history. Connie Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics until he was 87.
At Wimbledon, fresh off his sixth straight French Open title, Rafael Nadal began defense of his Wimbledon crown, defeating Michael Russell in straight sets. Andy Murray and Mardy Fish also advanced.
On the Women's side, Venus Williams, Vera Zvonareva, and Francesca Schiavona are also through to the second round.
And in college baseball, North Carolina eliminated Texas with a 3-0 win at the College World Series. UNC awaits either Florida or Vanderbilt, whose game was suspended yesterday in the sixth with the Gators leading 3-1.
